Today C-SPAN will share clips from past State of the Union addresses. Watch complete speeches in C-SPAN's Collection of State of the Union Addresses and Party Responses:
1937 – President Franklin D. Roosevelt: "Your task and mine is not ending with the end of the depression. The people of the United States have made it clear that they expect us to continue our active efforts in behalf of their peaceful advancement."
1951 – President Harry Truman: "Our men are fighting, alongside their United Nations allies, because they know, as we do, that the aggression in Korea is part of the attempt of the Russian Communist dictatorship to take over the world, step by step."
1957 – President Dwight Eisenhower: "America alone and isolated cannot assure even its own security. We must be joined by the capability and resolution of nations that have proved themselves dependable defenders of freedom. Isolation from them invites war."
1961– President John F. Kennedy: "I feel I must inform the Congress that our analyses over the last ten days make it clear that -- in each of the principal areas of crisis -- the tide of events has been running out and time has not been our friend.
1964– President Johnson: "Unfortunately, many Americans live on the outskirts of hope--some because of their poverty, and some because of their color, and all too many because of both. Our task is to help replace their despair with opportunity."
1974– President Nixon: "I believe the time has come to bring that investigation and the other investigations of this matter to an end. One year of Watergate is enough."
1975– President Ford: "I must say to you that the state of the Union is not good: Millions of Americans are out of work. Recession and inflation are eroding the money of millions more. Prices are too high, and sales are too slow."
1980– President Carter: "We superpowers also have the responsibility to exercise restraint in the use of our great military force. The integrity and the independence of weaker nations must not be threatened. They must know that in our presence they are secure."
1986– President Reagan: "Never has there been a more exciting time to be alive, a time of rousing wonder and heroic achievement. As they said in the film "Back to the Future," "Where we're going, we don't need roads."
1992– President George H.W. Bush: "Even now, months after the failed coup that doomed a failed system, I am not sure we've absorbed the full impact, the full import of what happened, but Communism died this year."
1996– President Clinton: "We have to give the American people one that lives within its means. The era of big government is over. But we cannot go back to the time when our citizens were left to fend for themselves."
2002– Pres. George W. Bush on North Korea, Iran & Iraq: "States like these, and their terrorist allies, constitute an axis of evil, arming to threaten the peace of the world. By seeking weapons of mass destruction, these regimes pose a grave and growing danger."
2016– President Barack Obama: "I believe in change because I believe in you, the American people. That's why I stand here as confident as I have ever been that the State of our Union is strong."
2019– President Donald Trump: "An economic miracle is taking place in the United States – and the only thing that can stop it are foolish wars, politics, or ridiculous partisan investigations."
2020– House Speaker Nancy Pelosi tears up the State of the Union as President Trump concludes
2022– President Joe Biden: "Six days ago, Russia’s Vladimir Putin sought to shake the foundations of the free world thinking he could make it bend to his menacing ways. But he badly miscalculated."
