House Republicans choose by majority vote Rep. Tom Emmer (R-MN), the current Majority Whip, as their party's new nominee for Speaker, after a seven-candidate race, through multiple rounds of secret ballots.
But, like the two previous Republican nominees for Speaker since former Speaker Kevin McCarthy (R-CA) was voted out, Rep. Emmer could not get enough Republicans to support to be elected Speaker in a House floor vote. In a roll call, 26 said they would not vote for him. He can only lose four. And former President Donald Trump came out against his candidacy.
Former Trump campaign attorney Jenna Ellis pleads guilty in the Georgia election interference racketeering case. In a statement to the court, she tells the judge she now regrets representing then-President Trump after the 2020 election.
