Former Boston Red Sox slugger David Ortiz was released from the hospital Friday, more than six weeks after he was shot at a bar in his native Dominican Republic.
The Red Sox confirmed to The Associated Press on Saturday that Ortiz had been discharged from Massachusetts General Hospital. ESPN reported that the 43-year-old will continue to rehabilitate at home, where he will be “assisted by full-time nurses” and “visited regularly by his personal doctor.”
Ortiz had been hospitalized in Boston since June 10, the day after he was shot in the back in Santo Domingo, the capital of the Dominican Republic. He has undergone at least three surgical procedures in the months since, most recently on July 11.
Dominican authorities have arrested at least 14 people in connection with the shooting, including the alleged gunman. They claimed that Ortiz was the victim of a hit gone wrong, and that another man was actually the intended target of the shooting.
“Hopefully we can see him soon,” Red Sox shortstop Xander Bogaerts said they beat the New York Yankees 9-5 on Saturday. “I know there’s a lot of guys in here that would want to go see him.”
