Government shuts down after lawmakers fail to reach funding deal

House Speaker Mike Johnson and the White House have targeted Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer (D-NY) following his previous strong anti-shutdown sentiments expressed during past standoffs.

But Schumer says those statements came amid intense negotiations between Republicans and Democrats which kept the government open – negotiations which he said did not take place this time.
