Mark Twain, back in the late 19th century, had a lot to say about financier and railroad owner Jay Gould, who was a very rich man. "Jay Gould was the mightiest disaster which has ever befallen this country," Twain wrote. "The people had desired money before his day, but he taught them to fall down and worship it." Greg Steinmetz, former reporter for the Wall Street Journal and current partner at a money management firm in New York City, included the Twain quote, and many others like it, in his biography of Jay Gould titled "American Rascal: How Jay Gould Built Wall Street's Biggest Fortune."
