House Minority Leader Kevin McCarthy set a record for the longest floor speech while speaking for eight hours and 32 minutes in opposition to the President's social spending bill. He began speaking at 8:38pm ET on Thursday and concluded at 5:10am ET on Friday. This breaks a previous record set by Nancy Pelosi in 2018, who for eight hours and 7 minutes. Each lawmaker used their "magic minute," which allows leadership to speak for an unlimited amount of time.
