Washington Today (5-26-23): Treasury Secretary Yellen extends debt default deadline to June 5

Treasury Secretary Janet Yellen sends a letter to House Speaker Kevin McCarthy saying she now estimates that the U.S. will be unable to pay all of its obligations on June 5th if the debt ceiling is not raised. It's a change from her previous estimate of "as soon as" June 1st.

This comes as White House and House Republican negotiators speak of 'progress' towards reaching a deal to raise the debt ceiling paired spending cuts. But there are final sticking points… and when those will be worked out is not clear….
