Washington Today (9-21-23): House done for week with gov't funding talks to prevent shutdown stalled

Speaker Kevin McCarthy (R-CA) cancels House business for the rest of the week, including an originally expected weekend session, because of continued gridlock among Republicans to agree on a way forward the fund the federal government and avoid a shutdown starting October 1st

Today the House defeated an attempt to bring up for debate a full fiscal year defense spending bill, an indication that a proposed short-term government funding bill would also not have enough votes to pass. We will talk about it Stef Kight, Axios Politics Reporter. (4)

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky comes to in Washington, meeting with House leadership and a majority of Senators, then going to the White House to speak to President Biden.

President Biden has requested $24 billion in new military and humanitarian aid for Ukraine for its ongoing war with Russia. Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer (D-NY) and the White House want it to be part of stopgap government funding. Speaker McCarthy says it should be voted on separately.

White House National Security Adviser Jake Sullivan is asked about the Canada's accusation that India was behind the assassination of a Canadian citizen who was a leader of the Sikh community.
