Mike Krack implied that Lance Stroll’s retirement at Monza was mainly to save mechanics. Seeing that its pilot could not register a point, Aston Martin F1 chose to bring him back to the garage definitely, as explained by its director.
« When you take a lap, you have no chance of doing anything strategy-wise with the safety car » explained Krack. « You’re stuck. We had to make the decision because it’s our third engine. »
« You see all these penalties and the races coming, it’s very difficult to overtake and we don’t want to risk a power unit. So when there was nothing left to gain, we decided to stop. »
On the other hand, Sebastian Vettel’s stop on the track was due to a battery problem which made the team fear that a fire could break out on the German’s AMR22.
“He reported a lack of power. We found a cell battery problem, an ERS problem and we had to stop the car. We tried to stop it in a safe place so that if there is a fire or something, we don’t have any major damage. »
